Italian and Mediterranean concepts in the works from Pihakis Restaurant Group

Pihakis Restaurant Group, the hospitality group led by restauranteur Nick Pihakis, has nine locations in the works this year, including two new restaurants: Tasty Town and Luca.

FSR magazine reported details on the two new concepts. Tasty Town will blend Mediterranean fare with Birmingham’s meat and three cuisine, allowing patrons to customize their plates with one meat and three sides. In 2019, the Birmingham Business Journal reported on restauranteur Nick Pihakis’ plans to open a traditional Southern meat-and-three in Baker’s Row II, a mixed-use development at 10 14th Street South and 1300 Powell Avenue under development by Corporate Realty.

Luca will serve elevated Italian fare. Chef Rita Bernhardt will helm the kitchen at Luca. Bernhardt was previously the executive chef at Satterfield’s in Cahaba Heights, where her husband William Barial IV also served as general manager. The husband and wife team joined Satterfield’s in 2019 after a number of culinary positions and projects in New Orleans, including the New Orleans gourmet pop-up, supper club, and catering service PDR.

Last year, Pihakis Restaurant Group opened a second location of Hero Doughnuts and Buns near downtown Birmingham’s Railroad Park at 1701 1st Ave S, replacing its location of Mile End Deli. Pihakis Restaurant Group and Capstone Real Estate Investments also announced plans to develop new locations of Rodney Scott’s BBQ and Little Donkey Mexican Restaurant along the block at 28th Avenue South and 18th Street South in Homewood.
